Does political competition influence economic development? Are political institutions like democracy good at providing public goods? Does reservation in political office hamper development? What attributes of politicians deliver economic success? Can political institutions perform efficiently in ethnically fragmented societies? Does political decentralisation deliver?
These questions are often discussed in public discourse and debates. How do we think about these issues analytically, construct credible hypotheses and test them using data? If these questions interest you, we have something to share!
The Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics is organising an “Intensive Workshop on Political Economy: Theory and Data Analysis” from 9 June to 11 June 2022, to introduce participants to ideas, mathematical models and econometric methods to work on issues in political economy. During the workshop, intensive training will be provided in relevant topics and methods in order to incubate international quality publishable research on topics in political economy.
Content: The workshop will provide an introduction to theoretical modelling approaches to issues in political economy. Further, it will focus on application of advanced causal inference techniques (Multivariate models, IV, DID, RDD) for empirical research on such topics. The workshop will have theory lectures as well as hands-on lab sessions. Functional STATA training will be provided during the sessions. The workshop will facilitate developing of research proposals, submitted by participants, towards research papers.

Participants: Open to all masters and doctoral students, PhD scholars, as well as junior faculty members who are interested in the latest research techniques to work on issues in political economy. Affiliation to an Economics or Political Science department is desirable, though not necessary. It is recommended that participants should have taken a course in basic statistics and econometrics at a Bachelor’s (preferably Master’s) level.
How to apply: The selection of participants is based on a two-page (max) research proposal on any topic in political economy. Submission is through this form.
The extended deadline for submission is 24 April 2022. Selected participants will be notified by 30th of April. There is no fee for this workshop. Meals and stay will be covered for all participants. Travel support (by train) will be provided to a limited number of out-station participants.
