GIPE is hosting a book event next Friday (29th April, 2022). This Friday we will be interacting with Rukmini S, an independent data journalist based in Chennai. She will be talking about her book, interesting tidbits about public data in India, some unknown facts and some critical gaps in data about India.
About the book:
Whole Numbers and Half Truths is a book that cleverly utilizes empirical evidence and interviews with experts and ordinary citizens to show just how much of the data we have is inaccessible and hard to interpret. Her work goes on to utilize data, some of it never before reported, and shows what these numbers can tell us about India. Claimed to be a timely and wholly original intervention in the conversation on data, it effectively creates a toolkit for India, to understand the social and political changes of the last few years and the ones to come.
About the author:
Rukmini has a Post-Graduate Diploma in Social Communications Media from Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai, and an MSc in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. Her work focuses on inequality, gender, caste and politics.She was earlier National Data Editor of The Hindu newspaper and now writes independently for Indian and international publications.

She won the Likho Awards for Excellence in Media in 2019. In 2020, she received an Honorable Mention for the Chameli Devi Jain Awards for an Outstanding Woman Journalist. Her podcast, the Moving Curve won an Emergent Ventures Covid-19 India Prize in 2020. Rukmini’s work on estimating COVID deaths in India won a 2022 Sigma Award.
Her first book, ‘Whole Numbers & Half Truths: What Data Can and Cannot Tell Us About Modern India’, was published by Amazon Westland in December 2021 and has become a national bestseller. Her second book will be published in 2022.
