28th Annual Convocation: Lord Meghnad Desai is the chief guest

The Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics will award degrees to its graduating students of the 2021-22 academic year on 24 September 2022 in the Kale Hall on campus. The 28th Annual Convocation will begin at 10 a.m. this Saturday. 

Lord Meghnad Desai is the honourable chief guest at the event. He is an eminent British economist and is a member of the British House of Lords, and has shouldered the responsibility of the UK’s Labour Party in the past. He is a Professor Emeritus at the London School of Economics (LSE) and has taught there for nearly 40 years. Desai has written nine books ranging from economics, politics, India and art.

Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute, Dr Rajiv Kumar will preside over the event. He is the former chairperson of Niti Aayog, Government of India’s chief policy think tank that replaced the erstwhile Planning Commission. He is an eminent economist and a writer of several books.

Following the tradition, the annual Kale Memorial Lecture, in the memory of Rao Bahadur R R Kale, the founder of Gokhale Institute, will be delivered by Lord Desai at 10.15 a.m. He will speak on the political economy of poverty in his talk. This will be the 83rd edition of the Kale Memorial lecture, an event which has seen Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Dr Manmohan Singh, Dr Raghuram Rajan speaking at the Institute.

Due to the pandemic, the Convocation ceremony could not take place for two consecutive years. This time, 462 graduating students will receive degrees from the Chief Guest and the Chancellor.
